The institute conducts education and research in the areas of steel production and processing as well as in the application of metallic materials. In doing so, education and advanced training are carried out on a scientific
level relating to practice.

The research is based on fundamental principles and is practice-oriented. It takes up current resarch topics and makes a scientific contribution to solve industrial problems.

A high national and international reputation for the research results and the scientific employees is ensured.

The institute offers an attractive work environment to all employees.

The Steel Institute is divided into three units. Prof. Wolfgang Bleck is director of the Chair and the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy. Its focus lies in materials science of metallic materials. Prof. Dieter Senk holds the chair of Metallurgy of Iron and Steel, which investigates the manifold aspects metallurgical process technology of iron base alloys. The Teaching and Research Area for Integrity of Materials and Structures under direction of Prof. Sebastian Münstermann has got its key research area in the field of optimized exploitation of mechanical property profiles of damage tolerant metallic materials.
